Distinguished and Famous people from North West Slopes
🏛️ Tony Windsor
Tony Windsor was born at Quirindi in 1950 and worked in farming before entering parliament. He represented Tamworth as an independent from 1991, then won the federal seat of New England in 2001. His position on the crossbench gave regional concerns national importance, particularly during the minority parliament formed after the 2010 election. Agriculture, education and communications infrastructure featured among the issues he pursued. His public career connects the North West Slopes with the practical consequences of electoral arithmetic: a regional representative could become central to decisions affecting the whole country.
🌾 John Anderson
John Anderson farmed at Mullaley before and during a parliamentary career representing Gwydir. Elected in 1989, he became National Party leader and deputy prime minister in 1999. His work joined regional representation with national debates over markets, infrastructure and rural policy. The family’s farming association around Mullaley stretched back generations, giving the North West Slopes connection a practical basis beyond an electorate boundary. His ministerial years also illustrate the tensions in modern agricultural politics, where commitments to regional communities had to be reconciled with major changes in economic policy.
